Lesson 1 - Piw2 Ovai ()
Coptic Letters That Look Like English

Coptic is an easy language to learn and to pronounce.  With only a few exceptions, all the words are pronounced how they are spelled (some letters have more than one way to pronounce them).

In this lesson, we will learn the Coptic letters that look like English letters.  First we'll look at the ones that look and sound like English, then the ones that look like English, but are pronounced differently.

For each letter, we will write it's name, how it looks, the pronunciation, a written example of how it sounds along with an audible example.

Follow these simple steps to help learn each letter:
     1. Look at how each letter is written
     2. Read the example.
     3. Try to say the underlined letter(s) of the sample word exactly how it is pronounced in the word.
     4. Click the to hear how the letter is actually pronounced.

Letters that look and sound like English:

Name Letter Pronunciation Example Sound
Alpha A a a Art
Beta B b b

Ei E e E Egg
Zeta Z z z Zoo
Iota I i ee Eat
Kappa K k k Kite
Mee M m m Mom
Nee N n n Night

Easy, right?  Now lets look at some Coptic letters that look like English letters, but are pronounced differently.

Now you know more than half (17 of the 32) of the letters of the Coptic alphabet.  Let's put to use what we've learned so far by reading a few simple words.
